Sheeran by Lowden are a range of newly designed guitars born out of a friendship between Ed Sheeran and George Lowden.
They offer aspiring musicians a guitar with great playability and tone using materials with high sustainability credentials, all designed and built in Ireland. ...
As an instrument is personal to both player and maker, the guitar has a way of bringing the two together with sometimes surprising results. Being a small, family-run business has allowed George Lowden to enjoy personal friendships with those who play his guitars, listening to their feedback to further his designs. When Ed told Gary Lightbody (front man for Irish band Snow Patrol) that he wanted a Lowden guitar, Gary gave him his own original Lowden – an authentic Bushmills® from 2012 which Ed used to write five songs for his number one album ‘X’ (Multiply).
Gary asked George if he would make a guitar for him to give Ed as a present. George developed a unique small guitar for Ed that later became a new model of Lowden Guitars – ‘The Wee Lowden’. George and Ed’s friendship developed further from their shared dream to give young, aspiring players access to a quality guitar; encouraging them to learn, progress and create music. From here, Sheeran by Lowden was born.
Ed Sheeran, began his recording career in 2004 and has since sold more than 38 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide. He was given his first Lowden as a present from Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol in 2012 but has always been a huge admirer of the brand. He wrote five songs for the album X on that guitar as well as recording them with it.
Ed believes that the Lowden guitars are as equally good for recording as well as playing live and this has help inspired the collaboration to help aspiring musicians have the chance to own their own Lowden.
At launch the Sheeran by Lowden range features eight individual models across two small body sizes familiar from the Lowden range, the ‘S’ and ‘the Wee.’ Ed Sheeran plays both player friendly sizes which are ready and responsive at home, on stage, and on the road.
George Lowden designed the guitars for the player, for uncompromising tone and playability with a careful choice of woods to ensure innate natural beauty. An ‘almost bare’ finish enhances this.
Based on the successful Lowden S (small) body, The Sheeran by Lowden S models deliver a surprisingly deep voice despite their size. Beyond a choice of solid wood tops, the S series features a selection of woods, a cutaway, and soundbox bevel.
Based on the Lowden WL (Wee Lowden) body size as originally designed for Ed Sheeran, the W Series models offer a compact feel without compromising in tone over larger guitars.
George Lowden’s career began at the age of 10. Desperately wanting to play a guitar but with no money to buy one, he decided to build it for himself. When he later decided to make guitars for a living, he chose not to copy existing designs but pioneered his own ‘curvy’ soundbox shapes, a new internal bracing and more natural satin finish. It is the attention to these unique and many other seemingly small details which gave George Lowden’s guitars the distinctive sound that is instantly recognisable today.
Sheeran by Lowden represents the next step for George in what has been over four decades of listening to players, working together with them to provide the very best acoustic guitars possible.
